Top Ten Tips to create the perfect Invitation

Ensure the success of your event by getting the Invitation spot on!

1. Reflect the event. Formal, more serious events often demand traditional thick white cards and black engraved script, but if it’s not, then anything goes, be imaginative and try to communicate the theme of the event i.e. a convention of cabinet makers may appreciate a look-a-like wooden invitation whilst an attorneys or bankers dinner might appreciate a much more formal style.

2. Plan ahead. 6-8 weeks before the event is considered the minimum for sending out invitations. Allow time for choosing stocks, good creative design, dummy runs and samples as well as the printing time, often these are not possible in today’s fast world we all live in.

3. Get the numbers correct. After compiling your guest list, increase the total by at least 20% before ordering the invitations. This will cover you for any mistakes at addressing stage and will prevent you having to re-order a small quantity later at a further expense. Maybe even order 25 extra envelopes as the cost is minimal but the saving in time could be critical.

4. Wording. Think carefully about the text. People need to know exactly how to reply, what time to turn up and what to wear. Do not make any of this appear confusing, many clients only start thinking about the final text after proofing, this however takes up valuable time and money.

5. Size is important. Traditional invites are 6x8”, 5½x7”, 5x7” but any size or shape is possible. Just remember you may need specially made envelopes to match, which will add to the overall cost and take a little longer to manufacture, but if you need them we can make them.

6. Consider material stock. Invitations do not always have to be on white card. Colored, metallic or textured boards, even plastics, wood or fabric can look stunning.

7. Techniques. Varying and mixing different print techniques can produce great results. Look at everything from Litho (flat) printing, Letterpress, Engraving and Foil blocking, Laser cutting to a unique shape, the choice is yours, we do them all.

8. Envelopes. Make the envelope match the invitation in size, shape and material. Colored paper or tissue linings will add to its style. Envelopes with traditional diamond flap and gummed. A small logo on the flap will finish it off perfectly!

9. Calligraphy. Stunning handwriting on the invitations and envelopes makes a huge difference. Remember to allow at least an extra week in the schedule and extra cost in your budget.

10. Don’t forget the extras. Remember you may also need Name cards, Menus, Table number or Name cards, Maps etc. They should all tie in with the invite and you’ll save money by printing them at the same time.
